Like Francisco Franco, the Cold Fusion-based CMS package, Spectra, just doesn't seem to want to die. After its unceremonious dumping by Macromedia, followed by a major channel backlash that got the code put into "community source," now Macromedia has announced that Spectra will be placed entirely into open source, with an Apache-style license (news by way of Steve Drucker of FigLeaf). You can expect, therefore, even more derivative Spectra "products" in the marketplace, mostly from small regional Macromedia partners. Tread cautiously there. Nevertheless, there is an opportunity for something good to come out of this if a strong group of project "committers" emerge (Apache-style) to patchy the buggy Spectra source with the best improvements from the past couple of years, assuming channel partners will actually see their way clear to contribute back to the commons...
