META estimate: what are they smoking?

We are tempted to wonder whether people are filling their pipes with more than Borkum Riff in Stamford CT, home of analyst firm METAgroup. META recently predicted a US$10 Billion market for Web content management systems in 2004, up from $880 million in 2000. Note that this is roughly the same figure META has been predicting since the bubble years. Should we tell them about the IT recession? To be fair, accurately estimating future market sizes of maturing tech sectors is extremely difficult -- we would argue impossible for CMS (for a number of reasons we'll discuss in a forthcoming article). And of course, some CMS vendors are doing quite well. But nowhere do we see any signs a twelve-fold increase in the market at large...
