Ektron Gets Flashy
We've been watching Flash slowly move across the radar screens of CMS user interface afficionadoes. Now Ektron announces a Flash-based interface to its popular eWebEditPro WYSIWYG browser widget. Ektron's core ActiveX offering, which is OEMed into several major CMS packages, heretofore only ran on Windows. So one of the first major benefits of the Flash GUI, if it works as touted, will be to bring more cross-browser compatibility to the marketplace. Java applets theoretically offer this, but they can be buggy and not as customizable. In the long run, we think Flash holds great promise for surpassing even Word as an editing environment. But in the meantime, Ektron may face skeptical CIOs and network administrators, who have more mundane concerns, like security and bandwidth impacts...
