Vignette recently announced a tighter integration between its portal product ("VAP") and its CMS offering ("V7"). The company says this close coupling is unique in the ECM suite space. We agree. But there are two other things going on here. First, VAP is a competitively stronger product than V7 in their respective spaces, and we'd guess the company is looking for the portal horse to pull the CMS cart, despite the latter's higher price point. Second, V7 is weak in some areas where VAP can compensate. To be sure, some enterprises will prefer a tightly-coupled portal and CMS, particularly if they haven't already purchased either one. We suspect, however, that most enterprises come to the party with more heterogeneous, loosely-coupled environments...
