Enterprise search is steadily finding its way to the desktop. Microsoft's Desktop Search Enterprise is now available -- for download, for asking you various questions, and for creating some interesting "lost in space" moments. First impression is that most users won't know the difference between this version and other desktop search tools. The biggest change is the addition of a policy file available as a separate download. An administrator can fire up gpedit and configure the search system for those connected to a network. Amateurs need not try this. Unfortunately, the help file is also wrong in a several places. If you are happy with Google, stay happy. Those annoyed with X1, Odyssey ISYS, Copernic, or other desktop search systems may want a test drive. Our guess: Some MS employees and most MS contractors will stick with Google just to avoid having the option of making one of Microsoft's animated search helpers a "feature" of the program.
