New evaluation research: Media Asset Management vendor Cinegy

We're continuing to expand the breadth of our in-depth evaluations of Media Asset Management vendors. This week we've added one more vendor to our Media Asset Management evaluations line up: Cinegy.

In our usual fashion, we rate Cinegy's MAM product, Cinegy Workflow and Archive,  based on its appropriateness for different use case scenarios. This helps you quickly identify whether Cinegy is a good fit for your requiments or not. Of course, we also get into the nitty-gritty of the product architecture and functionality, and provide commentary on the vendor intangibles as well, such as services and licensing models.

We believe this is the most detailed evaluation of Cinegy Workflow anywhere on this planet - including many things the vendor won't tell you, but potential customers should be aware of before committing their dollars, euros or company silver.

To give a sneak peek:  Cinegy Workflow has a surprisingly good overall usability (surprising because MAM systems are notorious for lack of usability) and offers interesting and useful features like offline mode for remote / field teams, a media cleaner to manage storage and a multi-clip viewer to help select the best footage from different cameras. Cinegy also packs in sufficient editing functionality and comes close to being a "channel in a box" (when combined with Cinegy's other products for playout, ingest and distibution).

But be aware that many Cinegy MAM projects tend to be of the departmental variety rather than large-scale enterprise projects - so in that sense, barring an odd exception, Cinegy has not been stress-tested to the same extent that the larger vendors like Avid, Dalet, Harris or Vizrt have been. Even if you decide to brave it out at the enterprise level, the pricing at the entry level looks attractive but may not offer much savings when you consider all aspects. Lastly, the company seems unable to break out of the European hinterland and land large clients in the larger broadcast and media markets.

That's for hors d'oeuvres. For the main course, subscribe to our Broadcast and Media Management research .

Our customers say...

"I've seen a lot of basic vendor comparison guides, but none of them come close to the technical depth, real-life experience, and hard-hitting critiques that I found in the Search & Information Access Research. When I need the real scoop about vendors, I always turn to the Real Story Group."
