The term "Digital Workplace” has entered into common usage, although people often disagree on exactly what it means. Construed very broadly, a digital workplace is a collection of digital systems that employees use to get work done.  Traditionally, these systems reflect how the enterprise wants that work to get done.  However, as work becomes more knowledge based, enterprises increasingly sense that new approaches must focus more intently on employee needs and effectiveness “at the glass.”

Top-performing organizations already recognize that superior employee experiences are intrinsically tied to the quality of their digital workplace. However, this quest for effectiveness is hampered by a lack of practical frameworks that assess their current state, analyze the environment from multiple vantage points, and help charter a custom roadmap.
In this regard, traditional IT-oriented architectural reference models can provide a layered inventory of digital workplace systems that form a baseline for further analysis of functional, integration, and security needs.

A complementary approach to the digital workplace examines the efficacy and usability of enterprise systems from the perspective of the employee.  An employee-centered reference model can tie systems analysis more closely to business value via the pursuit of employee effectiveness, engagement, and satisfaction.

This Advisory examines both reference models — enterprise-oriented and employee-centric models — and offers advice for workplace leaders seeking to systemically improve the effectiveness of their digital workplace.
