Portal technology has become a common component of IT infrastructures, but “portal” remains a frequently misused word. Many vendors avoid the term; others such as Oracle remain mixed on the moniker (e.g., dropping “Portal” from its product name only to bring it back). Moreover, some pundits consistently predict the demise of portal software.
