The public listing of Jive software on NASDAQ further established the enterprise collaboration and social software marketplace as a distinct - albeit still emerging - category of the enterprise software sector. As often is the case with emerging marketplaces, most of the innovation comes from smaller vendors, while larger, more traditional players remain in catch-up mode.
Nevertheless, the largest collaboration vendors (think Microsoft, IBM, and Oracle) are preparing major upgrades to their social collaboration suites over the course of 2012, which may lead to some realignment within the marketplace.
