Certain large IT projects (e.g., website re-platforming / redesign, portal implementations, document management systems, and more) can become extraordinarily complex and diverse, but they share one attribute; they all require some sort of content migration. Unfortunately, this migration effort usually receives little attention, or is pushed off until the end of the project.

A lack of migration planning can lead to two sets of problems in particular:

  • Missed opportunities - Even in cases where the actual content transfer goes smoothly, you may overlook opportunities to increase overall content quality.
  • Unpleasant surprises - Problems frequently occur because stakeholders were surprised by issues that should have been anticipated. Some of these problems can lead to cost or schedule overruns, which can seriously derail the larger project.

Using the example of a website transformation project, this advisory briefing describes where and how migration planning should come into play during any implementation lifecycle.
