Why you need a custom roadmap for your enterprise digital transformation

Digital transformation is a strategic priority for practically every enterprise these days. Assessing your current state is a natural first step. Usually, this takes the form of benchmarking that includes some quantified estimate. If you can't measure something, you can't improve it.

Next, you'd want to define a desired future state and develop a roadmap to get there. If you don't define your end state properly that can be problematic. As the old adage goes, "if you don't know where you are going, you'll never get there."

Fairly basic stuff, but what's your first step? As you may be aware RSG has developed the RealScore framework for assessing your current effectiveness.

Two Apparently Similar Companies

Here are the assessment results from two enterprise customers on their enterprise collaboration technology . According to this, both of them scored 36 out of a maximum possible score of 60 (or 57%). Note that both customers are from the same industry and their cumulative scores place them in the top-quartile in their industry.

RealScore Summary

Figure 1: Two enterprises in the same industry have the same RealScore.

Since both enterprises want to improve their effectiveness levels, the temptation is to prescribe the same medicine to both of them.

Not So Fast...

If we look closely at how they arrived at their current state, you'll find that while their overall score is the same, they are actually in two different places.

Figure 2:  Details of the RealScore composition

The overall score is derived from the scores for Organizational Development, Business Capabilities, and Systems.

Enterprise A is doing better on the Organizational Development dimension but doesn't fare well on Systems. The reverse is true for Enterprise B. Among other things, their respective current states are a result of their past investments, technology choices, and priorities.

Roadmap Implications

Here is where we come to a fork in the roadmap. A transformation roadmap will be more successful when it is customized based not only on your future goals but also considers all your accumulated enterprise karma (a.k.a., path dependence in strategic planning terminology).
