Nuxeo and DAM: separate, yet one
As part of the latest release of our DAM research, we’ve updated our evaluation of Nuxeo. Some of you may know this French ECM vendor that ventured into the land of DAM a few years back, when they started offering a separate DAM module based on the main Document Management platform, with some add-ons.
Since then, Nuxeo changed its strategy and rolled DAM functionality back into the core ECM; thus it is no longer sold/available separately. Yes, some of you may find this move confusing. So did I. It’s understandable that Nuxeo is looking to have more streamlined product lines and offerings, but for a regular customer who is looking to just implement a DAM, Nuxeo may not be the best fit.
Every breath the vendor takes – from UI, to features and functions, to company’s strategic direction – one cannot help but wonder how to (even mentally) separate out the DAM from the grand Enterprise Content Management platform. Similar approaches are taken by Oracle and EMC: DAM is secondary, just an appendage to a broader platform - one that, if you're not already invested, isn't worth considering for DAM-only needs.
It is not uncommon for some organizations needing a tightly woven combo of DM and DAM, but unless you’re one of those cases, I would strongly urge you to be cautious when considering Nuxeo as a standalone digital asset management product. The company’s dedication to this specific area of information management has been mostly indifferent.
On the other hand, if you forsee a blend of document and image management needs with lot of customization or application development on top of the Nuxeo platform, you might have reasons to consider Nuxeo. As always, the choice is yours - just be sure to understand your needs, first.
