Mobile is the Next Frontier for Web Content Management Technology

Version 20.0 of Real Story Group's Web CMS Report Marks Tenth Anniversary

BOSTON, DELHI, THE HAGUE, 27 April 2011 – Web content management vendors are making only halting moves towards mobile-enabling their applications and outputs, but they will apply significant resources to mobile services over the next year, according to independent industry analyst firm, The Real Story Group (formerly CMS Watch).

This finding came from the latest major release of The Real Story Group’s Web Content Management Evaluation Report. The new Version 20.0 represents its 10th year of publication. Originally launched as a review of 12 Web CMS vendors in 2001, the Web Content Management Evaluation Report now evaluates 43 web content management vendors head-to-head.

“Over the past ten years, we’ve seen the Web CMS technology pendulum swing back and forth between website management versus content management,” says Real Story Group founder, Tony Byrne. “The rise of e-marketing and engagement services has recently focused vendors on website management, but mobile is changing the game as organizations focus more on content and experiences relevant for multiple, different environments.”

Today, many Web CMS tools can generate outputs for different mobile formats, often via functionality that renders alternate templates for different devices. “Customers will still find a lot of room for improvement here among CMS tools,” notes Real Story Group analyst, Apoorv Durga, “especially for supporting HTML5-specific markup.” HTML5 is the next generation browser markup standard that provides significant mobile-specific functionality.

Meanwhile, Web CMS vendors generally do not provide effective mobile access to editorial and management interfaces. “Customers will want to test emerging mobile editorial interfaces very carefully,” suggests Real Story Group analyst, Irina Guseva, “because most CMS interfaces consist of rich dashboards that may not translate smoothly to a mobile-friendly experience.” Noting that vendors tend to mobile-enable only limited functionality like workflow services, Guseva adds, “Authoring remains much harder on a mobile phone, or even a tablet."

The Real Story Group has seen constant innovation in web content management technology over the past ten years. Not surprisingly, smaller, more focused vendors and open source projects continue to predominate in this marketplace. “The Web CMS marketplace will evolve significantly over the next ten years,” says Real Story Group analyst, Adriaan Bloem, “but it’s just as likely to remain as fragmented in 2021 as it is today.”
