What is an Enterprise Portal?
“Portal” is a term that is overloaded with definitions, but in simple terms, the purpose of a portal is to provide:
“A single point of access for information, data, applications, and processes.”
Portal technology is typically used to integrate information, people, and processes securely into a single location (user interface). For example, portals could provide customer access to a powerful shipping application on your website, or provide customer or employee self-service interfaces that pull different activities and applications together into a single environment.
To break it down a bit further, enterprise portals typically provide the following services:
- Content and application aggregation: Bringing common elements together into a larger whole
- Content and application integration: Bringing disparate elements together into a larger whole
- User interface unification: Providing a more consistent user experience across services
- Web application development platform unification: Consolidating and simplifying application development
- Content and service personalization or segmentation: Providing a more relevant user experience
