Should You Use SharePoint 2010 for Public Websites?

31-Mar-2011 By Apoorv Durga with Tony Byrne

SharePoint continues to make deep inroads into organizations of all types. Specifically, it has proved useful in document-centric collaboration and intranet scenarios. SharePoint also offers a more general-purpose framework for building different types of applications, including interactive public websites. Coupled with Redmond's aggressive marketing and ample channel partner support, this leads many enterprises to explore whether they can use SharePoint as a single platform for both internal and external web publishing efforts.

However, Marketing and Communications departments that manage public websites intuitively understand that a document-oriented platform may not suffice for the modern requirements of engagement and multi-channel publishing. To provide you with more insight into the downsides of consolidation, this briefing catalogs SharePoint's demerits for public website publishing.
