The virtual lock that MS Word holds on desktop authoring presents a real dilemma for CMS architects. On the one hand, Word's ubiquity often helps limit the number of Web conversion problems. On the other hand, Word is a binary, proprietary package that encourages users to co-mingle content, structure, and presentation in all sorts of messy ways that can limit that ultimate value of the information. But is the world outside of technical publishing really ready for XML editors? This debate, recently plumbed in some depth on the CMS listserv, carries no simple resolution...
