Lisa Welchman writes a nice entry on the importance of thoroughly vetting your content before embarking on a CMS project. It's hard to underestimate the importance of this. Better, in fact, to clean up your content than even your graphical design. Under a CMS it should be easy to modify your layouts. But the prospect of migrating X thousand pages of dubious value can outright kill a CMS project. The consulting community has an overabundance of metaphors for implementing a good CMS on top of FUBAR content. I've been known to talk about saddles on cows (how Stalin characterized communism in Poland). Deciding what to keep might be arduous, but Lisa argues that good content management is not for sissies. I'll add that deciding what is not important is the soul of management. Why not start today?

"Microsoft tells you it's wonderful, competitors tell you it's awful, and there's not a lot in between. The Real Story Group's SharePoint Research, does an excellent job of covering the 'in-between.' The authors have done an outstanding job in documenting what SharePoint is, in thinking about how and where it can be used effectively, and in giving prescriptive guidance to organizations that are considering SharePoint -- both to embrace the good, and to avoid the bad."
