When the Web becomes just a web

Topping my in-box this morning was a message from a trade magazine informing its regular contributors of a style change. Forthwith, the following terms, "web, website, webcast, internet, intranet, the net" shall merit only lower-case treatment. So be it. The web has become part of the fabric of business and, increasingly, personal information exchange. It's become less of a place and more of an approach -- or put another way, more of an adjective than a noun. What does this have to do with technology? Well, some major ECM vendors (Documentum, FileNet, Oracle, IBM, to name just a few) learned the wrong lesson from the dot-com collapse and relegated their web content management technologies to a backwater amid major deals for enterprise-wide document management installations. Now WCM has become strategic (albeit not lucrative), and they're playing catch-up. But web content management vendors of all stripes still struggle to make their products as normal, simple, and unremarkably lower-case to use as the web itself.
