Google recently analyzed more than a billion web pages, effectively charting just how messy HTML becomes in the wild. Public web pages are filled with random table tags, abused body elements and meta tags, extra editor-specific mark-up, and other arcana. But the news is not all bad: for microformats advocates, there is some convergence on class names, and img alt tags are more prevalent than you might have thought. Of course, one of the advantages of publishing out of a CMS is that you can standardize your HTML mark-up going forward, if you standardize your templates -- and assuming your CMS doesn't generate non-standard code on its own. Of course, this also means you need to clean up any existing HTML that you want to migrate into a system. Google's data suggests that there is a lot of work to do out there...
