Here in the USA it's the height of (American) football season, with college bowl games on nightly and 12 lucky pro teams gearing up for the playoffs. So it is an apt time for football analogies, and here's one from Vinnie Mirchandani: don't field an implementation team with 11 quarterbacks. Mirchandani refers primarily to large data-driven implementations, but the same could said for enterprise and web content management projects, where there is a chronic dearth of "soft" skills. Just this month I've encountered several mid-sized firms struggling to receive the breadth of consulting they needed from vendor/integrator combinations, let alone either supplier on their own. Of course, this raises an important question -- in a team of specialists, who should play quarterback? I would argue most times, the systems integrator. But it falls on you to make sure that your integrator will do what they normally avoid: bring in specialized talents from the outside when needed.
