The "Interoperable ECM" (iECM) standards initiative has gotten off to a fast start with surprisingly broad vendor support. Though should we really be surprised? In my travels, I see a lot of customers waiting to implement new content management systems -- or delaying an upgrade to their existing versions -- pending arrival of some vague future über-platform that will neatly wrap up all their information management problems into a single solution. I frequently counsel against waiting for ECM Godot (e.g. in the form of Microsoft). But you can understand vendors' interest in the standard: by reducing customers' fears of non-interoperability, real standards could unleash a backlog of investment in content management technology. More importantly, though, the iECM effort needs customer input to succeed. I encourage you to participate.
