Earlier this month I praised the development of a foundation for open-source CMS, Mambo, on the grounds that it would separate the codebase more cleanly from the originating services firm, Miro International Pty Ltd in Australia. It turns out that the idea for the foundation came from Mambo's "core development team," but Miro set up the foundation on its own. Bad move. The core dev team has rebelled, and set up their own site ("Open Source Matters"), which has attracted more than 1200 members at this writing. The dev teams says their version is not a fork, but I suspect 2 codebases will evolve. There is a lesson here for Zope (which recently formed a foundation) and Alfresco, both led by strong services firms. When there is a struggle between the founders and the community in a mature project, I have to believe the community will win in the long run.
