According to a new Forrester research report, Eclipse has won the battle to be the leading development tools integration framework. For the CMS world, many java developers would wish that vendors would pick up on this trend and begin to release better support for Eclipse. Template development, integration, and deployment remain quite complex and aggravating in today’s CMS marketplace, where most vendors have developed their own developer frameworks. Most of the time these are quite limited tools, and browser-based IDEs in particular can frustrate developers. The user communities for these proprietary environments are obviously tiny compared to the huge base working with Eclipse. Not just developers would benefit from greater Eclipse adoption. CMS vendors themselves would be able to free up resources to work on real CMS challenges, and perhaps also see increased adoption, since some developers opt for portals over pure-play CMS products because the former tend to integrate nicely with Eclipse.
