AIIM launches new ECM Standard effort

Industry association AIIM has launched a new standards group focused on ECM interoperability, or "iECM" for short. The broad scope of the project seems quite ambitious, but AIIM has a good track record of shepherding complex standards through the ISO process. Interestingly, the main vendor sponsor to date is Adobe, which traditionally had a somewhat file-centric view of interoperability -- although that could change with its pending acquisition of Macromedia. In any case, the iECM project's focus on common business services is right on target and could complement the JSR-170 repository services standard quite nicely. Today, when vendors espouse "services-oriented architectures" they typically mean that their products can produce services rather than consume them. In other words, you can extend Vendor A's workflow engine to other applications, but you can't easily swap it out with Vendor B's workflow service. Hopefully, work on this standard will begin to change that...
