Just back from several days in Japan talking to CMS vendors and practitioners. The CMS marketplace remains as fragmented in Japan as nearly everywhere else. Local vendors predominate in web content management. International vendors tend to focus on large DM systems for major multinationals. In general, the marketplace "feels" a couple of years behind Europe and North America from a technology and buyer's awareness perspective -- and also from a pricing standpoint, as license fees seem rather elevated, even when considering local cost-of-living. But one advantage to joining the party later is that Japanese practitioners can take better advantage of contemporary thinking on information architecture, accessibility, and design to craft more usable content management systems, and our sense is that many firms are achieving a comparatively better balance between discipline and technology...
