One of the bigger content management stories of 2004 was the development of thick clients for web content editing at various CMS suppliers. We think it's too early to give up on the browser. Vendors would do well to check out what Google is doing with two of its beta apps, Google Suggest and GMail. The former autofills a text entry field as you type (just like your favorite client-server apps did!); GMail allows you to classify and move content items without refreshing the screen. Behind each of these is a heretofore neglected request object called XMLHTTP, which allows for JavaScript-based communication with the server behind the scenes, without repainting the screen. Good news: some CMS vendors are already incorporating these new capabilities into their next-generation browser interfaces...
