After three years of on-and-off development, Zope has released "X3," a kind of interim preview of a completely new version, (Zope 3), minus backwards compatibility with Zope 2. The project was delayed in part because Zope Corporation needed to focus on commercial projects to stay afloat. The original vision statement for the new version provides an unusually candid window into the shortcomings with Zope 2.X that the development team has tried to address (we'd like to see other open-source projects produce similar examinations). Zope developers will appreciate the greater degree of abstraction in the new platform and the fact that previously separate content management components are now getting folded in. We also suspect Zope likely retains its steep learning curve, and you'll want to carefully review the FAQ about various compatibility issues...

The descriptions of how search works, recommendations for how teams and projects should be structured, as well as the information about hidden costs and how to control them make the research worth your time."
