While no one was looking, Macromedia released Version 3 of its collaborative Web publishing product, Contribute. The product takes some more baby steps towards real workflow and for the first time employs an optional run-time server module (which you would want to test carefully, since it's brand new) for managing visitor access and measuring traffic. In bundling Contribute together some other Macromedia products, the company has branded a "Web Publishing System" -- a CMS in all but name only. Macromedia brashly compares its new offering to EMC's Documentum. That's absurd. But the Web Publishing bundle is part of a growing -- and we think healthy -- trend in the marketplace towards assembling content management solutions from individual components. The best work here, however, is probably getting done by small integrators, bundling components (including Contribute) from multiple vendors...
