Staying Compliant in Europe

Amid all the hub-bub about Sarbox and new SEC regulations in the USA, let's not forget that European firms, especially in the financial sector, also face serious regulatory compliance challenges. A new report commissioned by ECM vendor FileNet issues all the usual paeans to compliance as a software-acquisition problem: 1) that you need lots of new tools (ideally from FileNet) to become compliant; 2) that those systems should be implemented on an enterprise scale and budget; and 3) that spending lots of euros on compliance can give you a competitive advantage (this third rationale now ubiquitous as prospective buyers cast increasing doubts on the first two). The usefulness of this report, though, is in reminding us that regulatory compliance remains a burden on both sides of the Atlantic, especially for bankers, who face national, EU, and international mandates...
