XSL-FO is a W3C-recommended standard for formatting XML for the printed page. Most CMS packages support basic XSLT for manipulating and viewing narrative text on a webpage, but XSL-FO support has been sparse. XyEnterprise, a vendor targeting the publishing and techdoc markets, recently announced FO support in its "XPP" CMS package. We're not keen on XPP's bundled style editor, on the grounds that layout tools should be separated from server tools, but the XyEnterprise's XSL-FO support is noteworthy. As more content management projects push back deeper into the enterprise, the ability to output effectively to print becomes more important. XSL-FO -- if your content management tools support it -- can become a plausible alternative to clunky XML-to-Quark(-and-back?) transformations...
