How Does SharePoint 2013 Stack Up for WCM?

Yesterday we released an update to our Web Content & Experience Management (WCM) vendor evaluation research with an emphasis on the .NET mid-market tier, including fresh takes for our 20-page reviews of:

  • Ektron
  • EPiServer
  • SharePoint 2013

The conclusion? For public-facing scenarios, SharePoint 2013 still clearly lags its direct competition, especially with respect to experience services. For digital workplace scenarios, SharePoint can play a useful role in publishing unstructured web content in addition to its collaborative services.

Of course, customer experience with SharePoint as a WCM platform still remains a bit thin (especially among larger enterprises), and so we will continue to monitor field experience over time. We were surprised, though, at how unpredictably the platform could behave as a Web CMS, given SharePoint's traditional legacy of fairly consistent -- if sometimes unremarkable -- behavior.
