What happens when you combine a novel, browser-based XML editor with a hosted document repository? Well, we're not really sure, but it will be interesting to find out. A start-up company, XMLDocs, joins a surprisingly fast-growing list of firms betting that small- to mid-sized business markets are ready for XML-based information management. The XMLDocs package -- presently in beta -- has some nice features for those customers new to XML, including on-the-fly schema (yes, schema) validation and a library of pre-existing templates. But developers will still need to know their way around XSD and XSL coding, and we wonder about the extent of those skills among smaller companies. In any case, we'll be watching closely for another reason: this approach could provide some lessons for new, services-oriented content architectures behind the firewall within large, distributed enterprises...
