I tend to be a bit "old school" when it comes to note taking and writing, something that can drive my colleagues (Tony in particular) crazy at times. Yet there is value in a fountain pen and a hard-backed notebook; for me the biggest value is to simply sit and scan through my scribbles and notes, that remain to some extent in context and for me at least a visceral reminder of actual events.
With these notes in mind then, I'll post verbatim key comments I recorded from one of Theresa Regli's panelists last week at Storage Expo in London. These comments came from the quite sublime Bob Plumridge of SNIA (Storage Networking Industry Association):
"If your storage needs are doubling every year, does that mean your business is doubling in size each year as well?.....NO it does not!"
"There are over 20,000 regulations worldwide that impact data storage"
"Keeping everything is one thing, finding it again is a different matter"
"What does long term storage actually mean? - In the storage industry 7 years, in the regulatory environment it can mean over 100 years"
"We have gone from it being considered impossible five years ago to have 1TB of storage on a single hard drive, to being able to buy the same for under £100 at PC World"
"Do you seriously believe you will be using the same storage media in 5 or 50 years time that you do today?"
All thought provoking stuff, essential really for ECM and E-mail Archiving teams, yet the kind of thing that we tend to fob off on the IT department to worry about, usually to our own long-term cost.

"As high-end web consultants, we use a variety of research tools to keep on top of the evolving technology platforms. Among these, Real Story Group is by far the best--a sort of bible for our CMS consulting practice. We've used The Web CMS Research both to get a jump on understanding products in advance of a formal CMS selection, as well as to start the conversation about potential partnerships. It's also great when a client asks you about an obscure product -- and you can get back to them within an hour with a grounded, thoughtful appraisal of the product, knowing that the information is accurate and written by analysts with real perspective."
