CMS Watch counsels that energy spent handicapping the CMS vendor horserace is almost always better re-allocated to analyzing your own content. Inevitably, that means starting with an overall content inventory of your site. But the task seems so daunting that many web managers are loathe to even begin. Jeff Veen, partner at consultancy Adaptive Path, offers a primer, as well as an Excel template to begin. We would add a few more columns to the spreadsheet (like approvals, element lists, etc.) and have greater faith in automated spiders than Jeff. Nevertheless, the template is a great start, and as Veen
notes, in the end, "a content inventory is a decidedly human task."
